Staris Kids — Refund & Billing Policy
Version: 1.0 · Effective date: 27 August 2026 · Controlling language: English. We also publish this document in Portuguese, Japanese, French, and Spanish; where the law of your place of residence entitles you to rely on the version in your own language, that version prevails for you to the extent of any inconsistency.
1. How billing works
All payments run through your app store. Every subscription and every credit top-up in Staris Kids (the "Service") is an in-app purchase made through the store you downloaded the App from — the Apple App Store or Google Play. The store operator processes your payment, charges your store account, manages renewals, and — where applicable — handles refunds under its own terms. We never see or store your full payment-card number.
RevenueCat manages your entitlements. We use RevenueCat to record what you are entitled to (your subscription status and credit balances) based on the store's purchase confirmations. RevenueCat receives purchase and entitlement records, not your card number. See the Privacy Policy (§6, subprocessors).
Because the store operator processes the payment, some billing actions — changing or cancelling your subscription, and requesting a refund — happen in your Apple account settings or Google Play account, not inside the App. This policy tells you which is which.
2. What you can buy
The Service offers two kinds of purchase. They follow different rules, so we keep them clearly separated throughout this policy.
| Purchase type | What it is | How it behaves |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | An auto-renewing paid plan (Basic, Standard or Premium) that unlocks the Service and grants included credits each cycle | Renews automatically until you cancel |
| Credit top-up (add-on) | A one-time consumable pack of extra credits you buy separately (for example, when you want more than your plan's monthly allowance) | Charged once; adds credits to your balance |
Prices, plan length, auto-renewal terms, and any free-trial terms are shown to you before you buy, on the purchase screen and in the App Store / Google Play listing. The number of credits each feature costs is shown in the App before you spend and on our published pricing page; cost changes are prospective, with notice, and never reduce credits you have already purchased.
3. Auto-renewal and free-trial disclosure
- Auto-renewal. A paid subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period, and your store account is charged the then-current price, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Where the consumer law of your place of residence imposes different renewal mechanics (for example, Québec's rules on fixed-term renewals or markets requiring affirmative renewal consent), renewals operate as that law requires.
- Managing or cancelling. You manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple account settings (Settings → your name → Subscriptions on iOS) or in Google Play → Payments & subscriptions on Android — the store operator runs the subscription, so that is the only place a cancellation takes effect. Cancelling stops the next renewal. It does not end the period you have already paid for, which runs to its scheduled end date, and it does not by itself trigger a refund of that period.
- Deleting your account or the App does not cancel a subscription. Deleting your Staris account removes your data from our systems, and deleting the App removes it from your device — neither one stops the store charging you. If you want the billing to stop, cancel in your Apple or Google Play account as well. (Terms of Use §5.)
- Free trial (if offered). Where a free trial is offered, its length and the price that begins after it are disclosed before you start. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, the subscription begins and your store account is charged automatically. Any unused portion of a free trial is forfeited when you buy the underlying subscription, per the store's standard terms.
- Price changes. If we increase a subscription price, we will give you advance notice (at least 30 days where practicable) and the increase will take effect no earlier than your next renewal, so you can cancel first; the store operator will notify you and, where required, seek your consent before the change applies.
These disclosures are also presented near the purchase button in the App and in the store listing, per Apple Guideline 3.1.2 and Google Play's subscriptions policy.
4. How credits work
Credits are how you create and unlock content (for example, creating a character or unlocking a pre-built story). There are two kinds of credit, and they expire under different rules.
4a. Included plan credits
- Your subscription grants a set number of included credits each billing cycle (Staris Basic: 12 per month; Staris Standard: 24 per month; Staris Premium: 36 per month).
- Included credits refresh on your billing date and do not roll over — unused credits do not carry into the next cycle. Changing to a higher-priced plan is the one exception; see below.
- Changing to a higher-priced plan. Where the store applies the change immediately, it may refund the unused portion of your previous subscription, charge the new plan in full, and move your billing date — and your credit refresh date — to the date of the change. Credits corresponding to any refunded portion of your previous subscription do not carry forward; credits corresponding to the portion you paid for and have not used are preserved. If you have already used credits from the portion that is refunded, you may begin the new plan with fewer than its standard monthly credit amount available.
- Trial and promotional credits do not carry into a paid subscription. If a free trial or promotion included credits, any you have not used stay with it; a paid subscription starts with that plan's own credit allowance.
- Included credits are a membership benefit: they end when your subscription ends.
4b. Add-on (top-up) credits
- Top-up credits are a separately purchased consumable. They are added to your balance and accumulate across purchases.
- They do not expire. Once you buy a pack, those credits stay on your balance.
- They are spendable only while your subscription is active. ("Active" includes the free-trial period and a subscription you have cancelled but are still inside the paid period.)
- If your subscription lapses (ends), your remaining top-up credits are paused — you cannot spend them while lapsed — but they are never deleted. They remain on your balance.
- Resubscribe at any time and your paused credits become usable again.
This rule is disclosed at the point of purchase, on the top-up purchase screen, before you can buy a pack. Example customer-facing wording:
Extra Credit packs are added to your balance and can be used while you have an active Staris subscription. Extra Credits don't expire. If your subscription ends, your remaining Extra Credits are paused — resubscribe anytime to use them again.
Purchased Extra Credits never expire. They are never destroyed — only paused while there is no active subscription, and restored when you resubscribe. This applies on both the App Store and Google Play.
What credits are. Credits (included or purchased) are a limited, personal, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Service features — not money, property, or stored value. They have no cash value and cannot be redeemed for cash (except where the law requires), sold, transferred, or exchanged outside the Service. We may adjust balances to correct error, fraud, or abuse.
Credits and your account. If you delete your account, any remaining credits lapse when deletion completes. If we terminate your account for a serious breach of the Terms, unspent credits may be forfeited. If the store operator refunds a credit-pack purchase, the corresponding credits are removed from your balance (and if they were already spent, we may deduct the shortfall from your remaining balance). None of this limits any non-excludable statutory refund right you have.
4c. Delivered generations, failed generations, and regenerating
- Creating a character, illustration, or story spends credits from your balance. Credits pay for the generation request — the work the Service performs when you confirm it — and the cost is shown in the App before you confirm.
- Failed generation — credits restored. If a generation does not deliver a usable result to your account, the credits spent on that attempt are automatically restored to your balance. You do not need to ask; the re-grant is automatic. This covers any reason a request does not produce a usable result, including an error on our side or content stopped by our safety systems.
- Delivered generation — credits are spent. If a usable result is delivered, the generation is complete and its credits are spent — even where the result carries the ordinary imperfections of AI-generated content, or is simply not what you were hoping for. AI output varies; the AI Content & Transparency Policy §3 describes what that looks like in practice, and Terms of Use §5 states the rule.
- Regenerating is a new request. Choosing to regenerate, redraw a page or a portrait, or rewrite a passage starts a new generation and uses credits at the rate shown before you confirm. A fresh attempt may not produce a result you prefer to the one you have.
- Goodwill re-grants. Separately from the automatic re-grant, we may restore credits as a customer-service measure where we think it is warranted — write to
support@cleverlabs.com.au. We do this at our discretion, and it is in addition to, never instead of, the statutory rights described in §7. - All of the above is separate from store refunds (§7): a re-grant returns credits, not money, and needs no refund request to Apple or Google.
5. Usage limits per plan
What you can do depends on your plan and your credit balance:
- Free / no active subscription: browse and read only. Every character and unlock costs credits; there is no free character.
- Trial: a set starter allowance (10 credits + 3 Quick Learns). Custom story generation remains subscription-only.
- Basic / Standard / Premium: included monthly credits plus anything you add via top-ups, subject to §4.
If your entitlement changes (for example, your subscription lapses), the limits above change accordingly. Content you have already created or unlocked remains readable regardless of your plan — see §8.
6. Restore Purchases
If you reinstall the App or switch devices, use Restore Purchases in the App to re-link the subscription and entitlements tied to your Apple or Google account. Restore Purchases is available in-app; on Android, Google Play also re-links entitlements automatically when you sign in.
7. Refunds
- The store operator handles refunds. Refund requests for subscriptions and top-ups are made to the store you purchased from — Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com or your Apple account) or Google (Google Play's refund process) — and the store decides them under its policies. We do not process card refunds directly.
- Your non-excludable statutory rights always apply. Nothing in this policy limits any consumer guarantee, right, or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded — including under the Australian Consumer Law and the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act. Where a service fails to meet a consumer guarantee that cannot be excluded, you may be entitled to a remedy regardless of the store's or our general refund position.
- Brazil — 7-day right of withdrawal (direito de arrependimento). If you are a consumer in Brazil, you may withdraw from a purchase within 7 days of it (Consumer Defense Code, Art. 49) and receive a full refund. Request it through the store's refund process or directly from us at
support@cleverlabs.com.au— if the store declines a request made within the legal window, contact us and we will make sure the refund is honored. - Other cooling-off / withdrawal rights (where local law provides them). Some markets give consumers a cooling-off period for distance purchases (for example, Argentina's 10-business-day revocation right). Where such a right applies, it operates alongside the store's refund process; for digital content, the right may end once delivery or performance begins with your consent, where local law so provides. Contact us or the store to exercise it.
- Otherwise. Except as required by law or granted by the store operator, purchases are non-refundable for change of mind, and partial billing periods and unused credits are not refunded. This does not apply to an adjustment the app store makes when you change plan: where the store prorates a subscription change, that adjustment is made by the store to your subscription — it is not a Staris refund of unused credits — and its effect on your credits is described in §4a.
8. What happens after your subscription ends
Stories and content you have already created or unlocked stay readable after your subscription ends. Ending a subscription stops future renewals and included-credit refreshes and pauses any add-on credits (§4b); it does not lock the library you have already built.
If we discontinue the Service or a plan. We may stop offering Staris Kids, a feature, or a subscription plan — including where it is no longer commercially viable to run. Terms of Use §13(b) governs: advance notice where reasonably practicable, a subscription period you have already paid for generally honoured until it ends, and a refund of the unused portion if we end a paid period early for any other reason — all without limiting your non-excludable rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Terms of Use §13(c) explains what happens to stories already saved on your device.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. We will change the version and effective date above and, for material changes, give notice in the App or by email before the change takes effect. We will not apply a changed credit rule to a top-up you already purchased except as the law and the store operator allow.
